RED HEART® "Heart & Sole™": 1 skein desired color. Shown in 3960 Spring Stripe or 3955 Mellow Stripe.

Knitting Needles: 3.5mm [US 4] double-pointed.
Stitch markers.
Yarn needle.

GAUGE: 28 sts = 4"; 34 rows = 4" in Stockinette st. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the specified gauge.

Finished Foot Length: 4 (5, 6)".

Pattern Stitch (multiple of 4 sts)
Rounds 1-3: Knit.
Round 4: K1, *p2, k2; repeat from * to last 3 sts, p2, k1.
Repeat Rounds 1-4 for Pattern stitch.

SOCKS
Cast on 32 (36, 40) sts.
Divide stitches evenly around double-pointed needles.
Join, taking care not to twist sts. Place marker for beginning of round.
Round 1: K1, *p2, k2; repeat from * to last 3 sts, p2, k1.
Repeat Round 1 until 4 rounds have been worked.
Change to Pattern st and work until piece measures 2 (3, 3½)" from beginning, end with Round 4.

Heel Flap
Work across 16 (18, 20) sts. Leave remaining sts unworked. Heel Flap is worked back and forth in rows.
Row 1 (Wrong Side): Slip 1, p15 (17, 19).
Row 2: Slip 1, knit across.
Row 3: Slip 1, purl across.
Row 4: Slip 1, [p2, k2] to last 3 (1, 3) sts, p2 (1, 2), k1 (0, 1).
Repeat Rows 1-4 for 3 (3, 4) times more, then work Rows 1-2 for 0 (1, 0) times.

Turn Heel
Row 1 (Wrong Side): P9 (11, 11), p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 2: Slip 1, k3 (5, 3), ssk, k1, turn.
Row 3: Slip 1, p4 (6, 4), p2tog, p1, turn.
Continue in this manner, working 1 st more on each row until 10 (12, 12) sts remain, end with a right side row.

Gusset
With right side facing, pick up and knit 8 (8, 10) sts along left side of Heel Flap, place first marker, keeping in Pattern st as established work across 16 (18, 20) unworked sts, place second marker, pick up and knit 8 (8, 10) sts along right side of Heel Flap - 42 (46, 52) sts.
Join to work in rounds.

Round 1: K5 (6, 6), place marker for beginning of round, knit to end of round
Round 2: Knit to 3 sts before first marker, k2tog, work to next second marker, k1, ssk, knit to end of round.
Repeat Rounds 1-2 for 4 (5, 7) more times more - 32 (34, 36) sts.

Keeping sts between first and second markers in Pattern st, Work even until Foot measures 3 (4, 5)" or 1" shorter than desired length.

Shape Toe
Round 1: Knit to 3 sts before first marker, k2tog, k2, ssk, knit to 3 sts before second marker, k2tog, k2, ssk, knit to end.
Round 2: Knit.
Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 for 4 times more, then Round 1 once - 8 (10, 12) sts.
Divide sts in half and graft together (see illustration).

FINISHING
Weave in ends.

GAUGE: 12 sts = 2"; 16 rows = 2" in sc. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

Directions are to fit Woman's shoe size 6 to 8; changes for Woman's shoe size 8½ to 10 are in parentheses.

SPECIAL ABBREVIATION:
Dec (decrease) = draw up a loop in next 2 sc, yarn over and draw through 3 loops on hook.

NOTE: In order to have matching socks, start each one at the same point in the color sequence of the yarn.

CUFF (Worked vertically in rows): Starting at center back, ch 31.

Rnd 1: Sc in next 6 (7) sc, working along side of heel flap in ends of rows, work 12 (14) sc evenly spaced to last row of heel flap, dec over next row and first st of instep (mark last st for gusset), sc in next 22 (26) instep sc, dec over next sc and edge of first row of flap (mark last st for gusset), working along side of heel flap in ends of rows, work 12 (14) sc evenly spaced along side of heel flap, sc in remaining 7 (8) sts of Row 14 of heel; join with a slip st in first sc and mark this sc for beginning of rnd—62 (72) sts.
Rnd 2: Sc in each sc to sc before first gusset marker, dec over next sc and marked sc (re-mark this st), sc in each sc to next marked st, dec over marked sc and next sc (re­mark this st), sc in each sc to end of rnd—60 (70) sc.
Rnds 3-8: Repeat Rnd 2—48 (58) sc. Remove gusset markers when working next rnd.
Rnd 9: Sc in each sc around.
Repeat Rnd 9 until 2½" less than desired length from beginning of heel.

TOE SHAPING: Fold sock flat having heel centered in bottom of foot. Mark one sc on each side of foot There should be 23 (28) sc between each marker; sc to 12th (14th) sc from right marker on bottom of foot and mark for beginning of rnd with double markers.
Rnd 1 : * Sc in each sc to 2 sc before marked side sc, dec over next 2 sc, sc in next sc (move marker up to sc just made), dec over next 2 sc; repeat from * once; sc to end of rnd—44 (54) sc.
Rnd 2: Sc in each sc around.
Rnds 3-6: Repeat Rows 1 and 2—36 (46) sc.
Rnd 7: * Sc in each sc to 2 sc before marked side sc, dec over next 2 sc, sc in next sc (mark sc just made), dec over next 2 sc; repeat from * once; sc to end of rnd—32 (42) sc.
Rnds 8-12 (14): Repeat Rnd 7—12 (14) sc. Fasten off leaving a long end for sewing.

FINISHING: Turn sock to wrong side and sew toe seam. Sew back cuff seam and weave in all ends.

RED HEART® "Heart & Sole™": 2 (2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3) Balls No. 3965 Razzle Dazzle.

Double-pointed Knitting Needles: 2.75mm [US 2].
Stitch marker; yarn needle.

GAUGE: 36 sts = 4"; 48 rnds = 4" in St st. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.

NOTE: Slip all sts as if to purl.

LEG: Cast on 48 (52, 56, 60, 64, 68, 68, 68) sts, dividing sts on 3 needles. Join to work in the round taking care that sts are not twisted. Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 1¼ (1¼, 1½, 1½, 1½, 1¾, 1¾, 1¾)". Now work in St st, K every rnd, until 7 (7, 8, 8, 8½, 9, 9½, 9½)" from beginning.

Divide for Heel: With the 4th needle, K12 (13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 17, 17) sts on first needle, slip the same number of sts from 3rd needle onto the opposite end of the 4th needle - 24 (26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 34, 34) sts on 4th needle for Heel. Cut yarn.
Divide the remaining 24 (26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 34, 34) sts evenly onto 2 needles for the Instep to work later.

With wrong side of work facing and working on heel sts only, work as follows:
Row 1 (Wrong Side): Slip 1, P to end.
Row 2: * Slip 1, K1; repeat from * across.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 for 2 (2, 2, 2¼, 2¼, 2¼, 2¼)", end by working Row 1.

Turn Heel-Row 1 (Right Side): K14 (15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 19, 19) sts, K2tog, K1; turn.
Row 2: Slip 1, P5, P2tog, P1; turn.
Row 3: Slip 1, K6, K2 tog, K1; turn.
Row 4: Slip 1, P7, P2tog, P1; turn.
Continue in this manner, working 1 st more st before the decrease every row until all heel sts have been worked, end by working a K row - 14 (16, 16, 18, 18, 20, 20, 20) sts remain.

Gusset: With the first needle, pick up and K12 (12, 12, 16, 16, 16, 16, 16) sts along edge of heel; slip the Instep sts onto one needle and with the 2nd needle, K24 (26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 34, 34) sts of Instep; with the 3rd needle, pick and K 12 (12, 12, 16, 16, 16, 16, 16) sts along other edge of heel and with same needle K7 (8, 8, 9, 9, 10, 10, 10) sts from heel needle. Slip remaining sts from heel needle onto first needle. There are 19 (20, 20, 25, 25, 26, 26, 26) sts on first and 3rd needles and 24 (26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 34, 34) sts on 2nd needle.

Shape Instep-Rnd 1: K to last 3 sts on first needle, K2tog, K1; K cross 2nd needle; on 3rd needle, K1, slip 1, K1, psso, K to end.
Rnd 2: K.
Repeat last 2 rnds until 12 (13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 17, 17) sts remain on each of the first and 3rd needles. Work even until 4 (4¾, 5½, 6¼, 7¼, 8, 9, 10)" from center back of heel.

Shape Toe-Rnd 1: K to last 3 sts on first needle, K2tog, K1; on 2nd needle, K1, slip 1, K1, psso, K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1; on 3rd needle, K1, slip 1, K1, psso, K to end.
Rnd 2: K.
Repeat last 2 rnds until 16 sts remain. With 3rd needle, K across sts of first needle - 8 sts on each of 2 needles. Cut yarn leaving a 20" length of yarn. Graft sts together.

Grafting: Thread needle with yarn. Holding the 2 needles together with yarn at the right of the back needle, draw yarn through next st on front needle as if to purl, leave st on needle,* draw yarn through next st on back needle as if to knit, leave st on needle, draw yarn through same st on front needle as if to knit, drop st off needle, draw yarn through next st on front needle as if to purl, leave st on needle, draw yarn through same st on back needle as if to purl, drop st off needle. Repeat from * until all sts are grafted together. Fasten securely on wrong side. Take care to draw yarn up so that gauge of grafting equals gauge of knitted sts.
