Skill level: Beginner

Crochet striped baby sweater and hat done in TLC Baby will look cute on any baby.

SUPPLIES

Cardigan directions are for 0 to 3 months; changes for 6, 9 and 12 months are in parentheses. Hat directions are for preemie; changes for 0-3 months and 6-12 months are in parentheses.

TLC® Baby, Art. E511, 100% acrylic, (6 oz. solid and 5 oz. multi-color skeins) and 64% acrylic/36% nylon (5 oz. sparkle skeins): Amount-Cardigan: 3 (3¼, 3½, 4) Ounces CA; 1½ (2, 2¼, 2½) ounces CB. Hat: 1¼ (1½, 1¾) ounces CA; 1 (1¼, 1¾) ounces CB.

CA = 8680 New Mint Sparkle; CB = 5011 White

Crochet Hooks: U.S. Sizes E-4 [3½mm] and G-6 [4mm].
Five ½" buttons.

GAUGE: In sc 18 sts = 4"; 20 rows = 4" with larger hook. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge given.

To Fit Chest: 7 (18, 1 9, 20)".
Finished Measurement: 21 (22¾, 24, 25¾)".
Hat Circumference: 12 (14, 16)".

CARDIGAN

BODY (Worked in one piece to underarms): With larger hook and CB ch 91 (99, 105, 113).

Row 1 (Right Side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; turn 90 (98, 104, 112) sc. Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across changing to CA in last st; turn.

Work in sc, working stripes of 2 rows CA and 2 rows of CB , until 4 (4½, 5, 5½)" from beg, end wrong side row.

Divide for fronts and back-Right Front: Keeping continuity of stripe pat, ch 1, sc across first 22 (24, 25, 27) sc; turn. Work even 3 (3½, 4, 4½)" above division, end wrong side row. Shape Neck: Sl st across first 7 sc, work across rem 15 (17, 18, 20) sc. Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 2 rows. Work even on 13 (15, 16, 18) sc until 4 (4½, 5, 5½)" above division. Fasten off.

Back: With right side facing, join yarn and sc in next 46 (50, 54, 58) sc of last long row; turn. Work even until back measures same as front to shoulder. Fasten off.

Left Front: With right side facing, join yarn and sc in last 22 (24, 25, 27) sc of last long row; turn. Complete to correspond to right front, reversing neck shaping.

Lower Ribbing: With right side facing and smaller hook, join CA at lower edge, ch 3, work 89 (97, 103, 111) dc across; turn – 90 (98, 104, 112) sts.

Ribbing Row: Ch 2, * dc around the post of the next dc from the back, dc around the post of the next dc from the front; rep from * to last st; hdc in top of ch; turn. Rep Ribbing Row once more. Fasten off.

SLEEVES: With larger hook and CB ch 31 (33, 35, 37). Work in sc stripe pat, same as for body, over 30 (32, 34, 36) sc, shaping sides by inc 1 st at each end of 5th row, then every 4th row until there are 36 (40, 44, 48) sc. Work even until 5½ (6, 6½, 7)" from beg. Fasten off.

Cuff Ribbing: With right side facing and smaller hook, join CA at lower edge, ch 3, work 25 (27, 27, 29) dc across; turn 26 (28, 28, 30) sts. Work 2 rows of ribbing same as for body. Fasten off.

FINISHING- Neckband: Sew shoulder seams. With right side facing and smaller hook, join CA at right front neck edge, ch 3, 12 dc across right neck edge to shoulder, 20 (20, 22, 22) dc across back neck, 13 dc down left front neck edge dash 46 (46, 48, 48) sts. Work 2 rows of ribbing same as for body. Fasten off.

Button Band (Work on left front for girls, right front for boys): With right side facing and smaller hook, join CA, ch 1, sc evenly across. Work 4 more rows sc. Fasten off.

Buttonhole Band: On rem front mark positions for 5 buttonholes. Work same as for button band for 2 rows. Buttonhole Row: Ch 1, [sc to marker, ch 2, skip 2 sc] 5 times, sc to end; turn. Next Row: Ch 1, [sc to sp, 2 sc in ch-2 sp] 5 times, sc to end; turn. Work 1 more sc row. Fasten off. Sew on buttons. Sew sleeve seams. Set in sleeves.

HAT

With larger hook and CB, ch 55 (64, 73). Work in sc and stripe pat same as for cardigan body over 54 (63, 72) sc until 4 (5, 6)" from beg.

Shape Top: Keeping continuity of stripe pat, dec 1 st at each end of every other row until 4 (3, 4) sc rem. Fasten off.

Ribbing: With right side facing and smaller hook, join CA at lower edge, ch 3, work 53 (63, 71) dc across; turn – 54 (64, 72) sts. Work 2 rows of ribbing same as for cardigan body. Fasten off. Sew back seam. Knot top of hat to fit.
