SUPPLIES

Cardigan and Hat directions are for Size Newborn to 3 months; changes for Sizes 6, 9 and 12-18 months are in parentheses. Sock directions are for Size Newborn to 3 months; changes for Sizes 6-9 and 12-18 months are in parentheses.

RED HEART® “Kids™”, 100% acrylic, Art. E711 (5 oz solids; 4 oz multi-color skeins): 1 skein each: No. 2734 Pink CA and No. 2945 Bikini CB.

Knitting Needles: 4 mm [US 6] and 5 mm [US 8]. Yarn needle; five 1/2" buttons, sewing needle and thread.

GAUGES: In St st: 18 sts = 4"; 24 rows = 4" on larger needles. In Pat: 18 sts = 4"; 30 rows = 4" on larger needles. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauges.

To Fit Chest: 17 (18, 19, 20)". Finished Chest Measurement: 19 (21 1/4, 24, 27)" – buttoned. Hat Circumference: 11 (12 1/2, 14, 15 1/4)".

CARDIGAN-BACK: With smaller needles and CA, cast on 45 (51, 57, 63) sts. Work in ribbing as follows: Row 1 (Right Side): K1, * P1, K1; rep from * across. Row 2: P1, * K1, P1; rep from * across. Rep Rows 1 and 2 for 1". Change to larger needles and CB, and work in St st, beg K row, until 91/2 (10, 11, 12)" from beg, end P row. Bind off 8 (11, 14, 17) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Put rem 29 sts on a holder.

LEFT FRONT: With smaller needles and CA, cast on 17 (21, 23, 27) sts. Work in ribbing same as back, inc 1 (0, 1, 0) st on last row, end Row 2 – 18 (21, 24, 27) sts. Change to larger needles and work in pat Check Pat as follows:

Row 1 (Right Side): With CA, K.

Row 2: P.

Row 3: With CB, K1, sl 1 purlwise, * K2, sl 1 purlwise; rep from * to last st; K1.

Row 4: K1, yarn forward, sl 1 purlwise, yarn back, * K2, yarn forward, sl 1 purlwise, yarn back; rep from * to last st, K1.

Rep Rows 1-4 for pat until 81/2 (9, 10, 11)" from beg, end pat Row 4.

Shape Neck: Keeping continuity of pat, with CA, K10 (13, 16, 19) sts, turn and put rem 8 sts on a holder. Dec 1 st at neck edge every other row until 8 (11, 14, 17) sts rem. Work even until front measures same as back to shoulder, end Row 2. Bind off

RIGHT FRONT: Work same as Left Front reversing neck shaping.

SLEEVES: With smaller needles and CB, cast on 25 (25, 27, 29) sts. Work in ribbing same as for back, inc 4 (6, 8, 10) sts evenly spaced on last row, end Row 2 – 29 (31, 35, 39) sts. Change to larger needles and CA and work in St st, beg K row, shaping sides by inc 1 st each end of 5th row, then every 6th row until there are 39 (41, 45, 51) sts. Work even until 61/2 (7, 71/2 , 8)" from beg, end P row. Bind off.

FINISHING-Neckband: Sew shoulder seams. With right side facing, smaller needles and CA, K across 8 sts on right front holder, pick up and K11 sts up neck edge, K across 29 sts from back neck holder, pick up 11 sts down left neck edge, K across 8 sts on holder – 67 sts. Work 7 rows ribbing, beg Row 2. Bind off in rib.

Button Band: With right side facing, smaller needles and CA, pick up and K43 (45, 51, 55) sts across left front edge. Work in ribbing, beg Row 2, for 6 rows. Bind off loosely in rib.

Buttonhole Band: On right front, mark positions for 5 buttonholes. Work same as for button band until 2 rows of ribbing are completed. Buttonhole Row: [Rib to marker, bind off 2 sts] 5 times, rib to end. Next Row: [Rib to bind-off, cast on 2 sts,] 5 times, rib to end. Work 2 rows even in ribbing. Bind off loosely in rib. Sew on buttons.

Mark front and back 41/4 (41/2, 5, 51/2 )" down from shoulder seams. Place center of sleeve top at shoulder seam and sew in place between markers. Sew side and sleeve seams.

HAT: With smaller needles and CA, cast on 48 (56, 60, 68) sts. Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 21/2 (3, 3, 31/2)" inc 3 (1, 3, 1) sts on last row – 51 (57, 63, 69) sts. Change to larger needles and work in Check Pat same as for Left Front, beg Row 1 until 5 (6, 6, 61/2)" from beg dec 2 (0, 2, 0) sts on last row, end Row 2 – 49 (57, 61, 69) sts. Fasten off CB.

Shape Top: [K2tog, K8 (10, 11, 13) sts, sl 1, K1, psso, place marker] 4 times, K1 – 41 (49, 53, 61) sts. Next Row: P. Next Row: [K2tog, K to 2 sts before marker, sl 1, K1, psso] 4 times, K1. Rep last 2 rows until 9 (9, 13, 13) sts rem. Cut yarn, leaving a long end and weave through rem sts. Draw up tightly and fasten securely. Sew seam, reversing for cuff. Fold cuff to the right side. Make a pom pom with CB and fasten to top of hat.

SOCKS: Beg at sole, with smaller (larger, larger) needles and CB, cast on 33 (33, 39) sts. Marking first row as the right side, K 13 rows. Shape Instep-Row 1: K8 (8, 10), P11 (11, 13), P3tog; TURN. Row 2: Sl 1, K5 (5, 7), sl 1, K2tog, psso; TURN. Row 3: Sl 1, P5 (5, 7), P3tog; TURN. Rep Rows 2 and 3 twice more, then rep Row 2 once more, do NOT turn, but K to end of row – 17 (17, 23) sts. K 16 rows. Bind off loosely. Sew back/bottom seam.
