Hat circumference is 16". Fits most toddlers.

RED HEART® "Eco-Ways™ Bamboo Wool™": 1 ball each 3775 Lipstick A, 3540 Violet B, 3265 Gold C.

Knitting Needles: 3.5mm [US 4] and 3.75mm [US 5].
Circular Knitting Needles: 3.75 [US 5] 32".
Yarn needle.

GAUGE: 22 sts = 4"; 28 rows = 4" in Stockinette stitch. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.

NOTE: Ruffle is worked back and forth in rows. Circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of cast on stitches. When working stripe pattern, carry yarn not in use loosely across wrong side.

HAT
Brim
Picot Hem
With smaller needles and B, cast on 80 sts.
Begin with a right side row, work 4 rows even in St st.
Next Row (RS): K1 * yo, k2tog; repeat from * to last st, k1. Change to larger needles, and work 3 rows even in St st.

Begin Stripe Pattern
Next Row (RS): Continue even in St st, and work stripe pattern as follows:
Row 1: * K2 A, k2 B; repeat from * across.
Row 2: * P2 B, p2 A; repeat from * across. Repeat stripe pattern 6 times more. Cut A. With B, work 2 rows even in st st.
Set work aside.

Ruffle
With C and circular needles, cast on 320 stitches.
Row 1 (RS): * K2, lift first st knit over and off needle as in bind off; repeat from * across-160 sts.
Row 2: * P2tog; repeat from * across-80 sts.
Work 2 rows even in St st.

Join Brim and Ruffle
Arrange needles parallel with each other so that needle holding ruffle is in front of needle holding brim, with both right sides facing you. With larger needles and C, k the first st from each set of needles together-1 st on needle. Continue in this manner, knitting both sets of sts together to the end-80 sts.

Shape Crown
Continue with C, work 5 rows even in St st.
Row 1 (RS): * K2tog, k6; repeat from * across-70 sts.
Row 2 and all even numbered rows: Purl.
Row 3: * K2tog, k5; repeat from * across-60 sts.
Row 5: * K2tog, k4; repeat from * across-50 sts.
Row 7: * K2tog, k3; repeat from * across-40 sts.
Row 9: * K2tog, k2; repeat from * across-30 sts.
Row 11: * K2tog, k1; repeat from *across-20 sts.
Row 13: * K2tog; repeat from * across-10 sts. Cut yarn leaving long tail. Thread through sts and pull tightly to secure

Bobble Topper
With larger needles and A, cast on 12 sts, leaving a 12" tail. Begin with a right side row, work 2 rows even in St st.
Next Row (RS): * K2tog; repeat from * across-6 sts.
Next Row: *P2tog; repeat from * across-3 sts.
Next Row: K3tog-1 st.
Fasten off last stitch, leaving long tail. Stuff bobble with cast on tail. Thread yarn needle with last tail, weave yarn in and out of sts along cast on edge of bobble. Pull the yarn tightly to gather.

FINISHING
Sew back seam. Fold edge at Picot row to wrong side and whipstitch in place. Sew bobble to top center of hat. Weave in yarn ends.

French Knot Embellishments
Stitch French Knots in A & B randomly around crown. Thread yarn needle with desired color, insert needle from back to front. Wrap yarn around needle three or four times (see illustration) then insert needle back through, right next to the entry hole, taking care that the yarn is in position shown in the illustration. Tug yarn gently to tighten knot. Secure ends.
