Striped Tote measures 28 1/2" around x 9" deep. Flap Bag measures 10 1/2" wide x 7 1/2" deep.

J&P Coats Crochet Nylon, 100% nylon, Art. A70 (150 yard tubes).

Amount-Striped Tote: 2 Tubes No. 19 Black CA and 1 tube No. 18 Dark Brown CB; Flap Bag: 2 Tubes No. 43 Beige.

Crochet Hooks: U.S. Sizes E-4 [3 1/2mm] and F-5 [3 3/4mm].

1/2 Yard lining fabric, sewing needle and thread.

GAUGES: In sc rnds - 16 sts = 4"; 19 rnds = 4" with larger hook. In sc/dc pat - 14 sts = 4"; 16 rnds = 4" with larger hook. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauges given.

Striped Tote

Base: With larger hook and CA, ch 47. Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; turn - 46 sc. Rows 2-9: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 44 sc, 3 sc in last sc, 7 sc across short end, 3 sc in corner, 44 sc across beg ch, 3 sc in corner, 7 sc across short end, 1 sc in corner; join with a sl st to first sc; turn - 114 sc.

Rnds 2-4: Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join; turn. Change to CB in last st of last rnd. Now work 2 rnds CB, then 2 rnds CA, joining and turning each rnd as before until 9" above base, end with 3 rnds of CA. Fasten off.

Straps (Make 2): With larger hook and CA, ch 5. Work in rows of sc over 4 sc until 20" from beg; change to smaller hook and work 1 rnd of sc evenly around strap; join. Fasten off. Sew ends of straps 4" apart at the center top of each side.

Lining: Cut 2 pieces of lining fabric 15 1/4" x 11". With right sides together, stitch a 1/2" seam along the 2 sides and the bottom, leaving the top edge open. Stay stitch 3/8" from the top edge. Gusset: Open the lining and with right sides still together, align the bottom and side seam of one corner. Stitch a 2" seam, beginning and ending 1 1/2" from the corner on each folded edge. Repeat with remaining corner. Insert lining into bag, wrong sides together. Turn under the top edge just beyond the stay stitching and stitch in place along the top of the bag.

Flap Bag

With larger hook, ch 35. Rnd 1: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 32 ch, 4 sc in last ch, working on opposite side of beg ch, sc in next 32 Ips, 2 sc in same ch as first sc; join - 72 sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 32 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 32 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in last sc; join - 76 sc.

Rnd 3: Ch 1 , sc in first sc, dc in next sc, * sc in next sc, dc in next sc; rep from * around; join to first sc; turn.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, * sc in dc, dc in sc; rep from * around noting that last dc is worked into same sc as joining of previous rnd; join; turn.

Rep Rnd 4 until 7 1/2" from beg ch, end wrong side rnd.

Divide for Flap-Row 1: Ch 1, sc in first 4 sts, [sc in next dc, dc in next sc] 15 times; turn.

Next Row: Ch 1, [sc in dc, dc in sc] 15 times; turn - 30 sts.

Rep last row until flap measures 5", end wrong side row.

Shape Flap: Ch 1, skip first sc; draw up a lp in each of next 2 sts, yo and draw through 3 lps on hook - decrease made; dc in next sc, * sc in dc, dc in sc; rep from * across - 28 sts.

Rep last row until 22 sts rem, end wrong side row. Fasten off.

With right side facing and smaller hook, join to first row of flap, work 1 rnd sc evenly around flap and inner edge of bag; join. Fasten off.

Strap: Ch 161. Rnd 1: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch to last ch, 4 sc in last ch, working on opposite side of beg ch, sc in each ch to last ch, 2 sc in same ch as first sc; join - 324 sc. Rnd 2: Ch 1, sl st in back lp of each sc around; join. Fasten off. Sew ends of strap to inner side edges of bag.

Lining: Cut 2 pieces of lining fabric 11 1/2" x 8 1/2". With right sides together, stitch a 1/2" seam along the 2 sides and the bottom, leaving the top edge open. Stay stitch 3/8" from the top edge. Insert lining into bag, wrong sides together. Turn under the top edge just beyond the stay stitching and stitch in place along the top of the bag.
