Approximate Size 47½ x 62 inches

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

Columbia-Minerva
Wool 4-Ply Worsted (4 oz. pull skein)
Color A (Kelly) 6 skeins
Color B (Blue) 6 skeins
Color C (Yellow) 2 skeins
Color D (Orange) 1 skein
Color E (Lt. Pink) 1 skein
Color F (Med. Pink) 1 skein

Needles: One "Boye" crochet hook Size H, one tapestry needle and one yarn darner needle

Gauge: 7 sts to 2 inches

Locked Single Crochet:

Row 1: Yo, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw yarn through the ch and the yo on hook, yo and draw through 2 loops to complete locked sc, * yo, insert hook in next ch and draw yarn through ch and the yo on hook, yo and draw through 2 loops, repeat from * across, ch 2, turn.

Row 2: 1 locked sc in first st and in each st across, ch 2, turn. Repeat Row 2 for pat.

SQUARE: With A—ch 27. Work in pat for 7¾ inches. Fasten off. Approximate size of each square is 7¾ x 7¾ inches. Make 24 squares each of A and B.

EMBROIDERY: Trace design from Chart and make a stencil. Cut out shaded area. With a contrasting color marking pen or chalk, mark both inside and outside edge of stencil, using right side of stencil for Color A squares. Turn stencil over and mark Color B squares in opposite direction. Cut a few strands of Color C and E into 1-yard lengths. Separate each strand into 2 two-ply strands. Thread tapestry needle with a two-ply strand. Using Color C for the Color A squares and Color E for the Color B squares, work "Filling Stitch" at inside of marked patterns as follows: Bring needle to right side of work at wide side as indicated on Chart. Working first row from right to left (Fig 1) * skip ¼ inch, insert needle (G) into stitch, bringing out at (H), repeat from * across straight edge of outline (Fig 2). Make a small stitch to attach yarn at start of row—about ¼ inch to left (Fig 3) then work Row 2 from left to right, bringing needle under next loop as illustrated and attaching yarn at end of row by making small stitch about ¼ inch to right. Repeat Row 2 until design is filled in, working back and forth.

BORDER AROUND DESIGN: Using full strand of Color C, embroider a row of chain stitch around design on the B squares, making each chain about ½ inch long. With Color D—work a 2nd row of chain stitch around first row, extending row about 1 inch past start as indicated. With a two-ply strand of Color C, work a lazy daisy in each chain of Row 2, fastening each loop down with a two-ply strand of Color D. Work border and lazy daisies around design in Color A squares, using Color E for Row 1 of chain stitch and Color F for Row 2. Work lazy daisies around Row 2 with two-ply strand of Color E, fastening down loops with Color F.

With 2-ply strand of Color A on B squares and Color B on A squares, embroider spray of 9 lazy daisies in center of "'palmetto" as shown. With full strand of Color C—work Blanket Stitch around each square, having 26 sts at upper and lower edges and 21 at each side.

JOINING: Alternating Color A and Color B squares, make 8 strips of 6 squares each. Using full strand of Color D, lace squares tog then join into strips, keeping slant of lacing consistent.

CORNER DESIGN: With two-ply strand of Color C—embroider 3 loop stitches in each corner, having loops about ½ inch long.
