Approximately 50 x 70 ins., without fringe.

(For Experienced Knitters)

MATERIALS: Columbia-Minerva Nantuk 4-ply (4 oz. ball)-16. Nantuk color shown is Lt Gold.
NEEDLE: Circular needle, 36 in. size 11-or size needed to obtain gauge given below. Cable needle.
CROCHET HOOK: Size I.

GAUGE: In overall pat with 2 strands of yarn-3 sts and 4 rows = 1 in.
Take time to check gauge.

NOTES: Afghan is knit in one piece working with 2 strands of yarn throughout. Keep a careful row count of each pat.

PATTERN STITCHES USED

RS - Rope Stitch: (worked on 2 sts - used in Pats I, II and IV.)

Row 1: (right side) Skip first st, k into front lp of 2nd st, then k skipped st and sl both sts off needle.

Row 2: P 2.

Rep these 2 rows for pat.

PATTERN I - Branch Cable (17 sts)

Row 1: (right side) P 1, RS, p 1, k 9, p 1, RS, p 1.

Row 2: K 1, p 2, k 1, p 9, k 1, p 2, k 1.

Row 3: Rep row 1.

Row 4 and All Wrong Side Rows: Rep row 2.

Row 5 - Left Twist: P 1, RS, p 1, k 3, sl next 3 sts to cable needle (cn) and hold at front of work, k next 3 sts, k 3 sts from cn, p 1, RS, p 1.

Row 7 - Right Twist: P 1, RS, p 1, sl next 3 sts to cn and hold at back of work, k next 3 sts, k 3 sts from cn, k 3, p 1, RS, p 1.

Row 9: Rep row 1.

Row 10: Rep row 2.

Rep these 10 rows for pat.

PATTERN II - Popcorn (13 sts)

Row 1: (right side) P 1, RS, p 7, RS, p 1.

Row 2: K 1, p 2, k 7, p 2, k 1.

Row 3: Rep row 1.

Row 4 and All Wrong Side Rows: Rep row 2.

Row 5 - Popcorn Row: P 1, RS, p 3, work a 5 st popcorn in next st as follows-[k into st leaving lp of original st on left point, sl st just worked from right point back to left point and k same st again slipping this st only to right point] 5 times, drop lp of original st from left point, there are now 5 sts in one on right point, pass the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th sts over first st at point one at a time to complete popcorn, p 3, RS, p 1.

Rows 7 and 9: Rep row 1.

Row 10: Rep row 2.

Rep these 10 rows for pat.

PATTERN III - Broken Ribbing (10 sts)

Row 1: (right side) K 2, [p 2, k 2] twice.

Row 2: P 2, [k 2, p 2] twice.

Row 3: K.

Row 4: P.

Rep these 4 rows for pat.

PATTERN IV - Seed St Diamond (19 sts)

Row 1: (right side) P 1, RS, p 6, k 1, p 6, RS, p 1.

Row 2: K 1, p 2, k 6, p 1, k 6, p 2, k 1.

Row 3: P 1, RS, p 5, k 1, p 1, k 1, p 5, RS, p 1.

Row 4: K 1, p 2, k 5, p 1, k 1, p 1, k 5, p 2, k 1.

Row 5: P 1, RS, p 4, k 1, [p 1, k 1] twice, p 4, RS, p 1.

Row 6 and All Wrong Side Rows: K the k sts and p the p sts.

Row 7: P 1, RS, p 3, k 1, [p 1, k 1] 3 times, p 3, RS, p 1.

Row 9: P 1, RS, p 2, k 1, [p 1, k 1] 4 times, p 2, RS, p 1.

Row 11: P 1, RS, p 1, k 1, [p 1, k 1] 5 times, p 1, RS, p 1.

Row 13: Rep row 9.

Row 15: Rep row 7.

Row 17: Rep row 5.

Row 19: Rep row 3.

Row 20: Rep row 4.

Rep these 20 rows for pat.

PATTERN V - Honeycomb (34 sts)

Row 1: (right side) P 1, k 32, p 1.

Row 2: K 1, p 32, k 1.

Row 3: P 1, * sl next 2 sts to cable needle (cn) and hold at back of work, k next 2 sts, k 2 sts from cn, sl next 2 sts to cn and hold at front of work, k next 2 sts, k 2 sts from cn; rep from * 3 times more, end with p 1.

Row 4 and All Wrong Side Rows: Rep row 2.

Row 5: Rep row 1.

Row 7: P 1, * sl next 2 sts to cn and hold at front, k next 2 sts, k 2 sts from cn, sl next 2 sts to cn and hold at back, k next 2 sts, k 2 sts from cn; rep from * 3 times more, end with p 1.

Row 8: Rep row 2.

Rep these 8 rows for pat.

AFGHAN: With circular needle and 2 strands of yarn, cast on 152 sts by knitting sts onto needle. Do not join. Work back and forth on needle.

Row 1: (right side) Place a marker between each group of sts and work row 1 of each pat across as follows - work Pat I on 17 sts; Pat II on 13 sts; Pat III on 10 sts; Pat IV on 19 sts; Pat V on center 34 sts; then work Pat IV on 19 sts; Pat III on 10 sts; Pat II on 13 sts; Pat I on rem 17 sts. Sl markers every row.

Row 2: Working row 2 of each pat across, work Pat I; Pat II; Pat III; Pat IV; Pat V; then work Pat IV; Pat III; Pat II; Pat 1.

Continue to work consecutive rows of each pat until the 20th row of the 14th diamond rep has been completed. Work row 1 of all pats on next row. Bind off as for row 2 of all pats.

FINISHING: From right side, with crochet hook and 2 strands of yarn, work a row of sc across upper and lower ends.

Knotted Fringe: Wind yarn loosely around a 10" piece of cardboard; cut one end.

Row 1: Working from wrong side of afghan, beg in first sc on either end, * fold 8 strands of cut yarn in half forming a loop, insert hook in sc and draw all strands of loop through sc for about 1" , then draw loose ends through loop and tighten; rep from * in every 4th sc across ending in last sc.

Row 2: Beg at outside edge, tie 4 strands from first fringe and 4 strands from 2nd fringe tog in an overhand knot so knot falls between the 2 fringes about 1" below row 1; * tie rem 4 strands from last fringe and 4 strands from next fringe tog with overhand knot so knot falls between these 2 fringes level with last knot; rep from * across. Tie a knot in rem 4 strands at each end. Work knotted fringe on opposite end in same way.

Steam afghan lightly to measurements and trim fringe evenly.
