Gold Basin Vest, Skirt & Cap Pattern

Directions are for Small Size (8 to 10). Changes for Medium (12 to 14) and Large (16 to 18) are in parentheses.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Columbia-Minerva Nantuk Sweater & Afghan Yarn (2 oz pull skein):
Color A: 3 (4-5) skeins for Skirt and 1 skein for Cap and Vest
Colors B & C: 2 (2-3) skeins each for Vest

Needles: One "Boye" afghan hook Size K and one crochet hook Size 0

Gauge: 5 pats to 4 inches 9 rows to 4 inches

PATTERN STITCH: Multiple of 4 afghan sts to each cluster with one single st between. Ch indicated number of sts.

Row 1: Counting loop on hook as first st, insert hook in next st and draw up a loop, keeping all loops on hook, draw up a loop in each ch st. To work off loops: Yo and draw through 1 loop, * yo and draw through 4 loops for a cluster, yo and draw through 2 loops, repeat from * until 1 loop rem's.

Row 2: With loop on hook for first st, * draw up a loop between st on hook and cluster, draw up a loop in top of cluster, draw up a loop between cluster and next vertical bar, draw up a loop in vertical bar for single st, repeat from * across, drawing up last loop through last st for firm edge. Work off loops as before. Repeat Row 2 for pat.

SKIRT

Skirt is planned for 15-inch length. For longer skirt work more rows before first dec row.

Back: With Color A and Size K hook—ch 105 (117-129). Work on the 26 (29-32) pats for 3 inches.

** First Dec Row: With 1 loop on hook, draw up a loop in top of first cluster, draw up a loop in single st, work in pat to last cluster, draw up a loop in top of cluster, draw up a loop through last st: 2 loops dec'd at each side. To work off loops: Yo and draw through 1 loop, yo and through 2 loops, * yo and through 2 loops, yo and through 4 loops, repeat from * to last 4 loops, yo and through 2 loops, yo and through last 3 loops.

2nd Dec Row: With 1 loop on hook, skip next vertical bar, draw up a loop in next single st, work in pat to last 2 sts, skip next vertical bar, draw loop through last st. To work off loops: Yo and through 1 loop, yo and through 2 loops, * yo and through 4 loops, yo and through 2 loops, repeat from * to last 2 sts, yo and through last 2 loops.

3rd Dec Row: With 1 loop on hook, skip next vertical bar (the single st), * draw up a loop before next cluster, draw up a loop in top of cluster, draw up a loop between cluster and next vertical bar, draw up a loop in vertical bar, repeat from * across, skipping last vertical bar and drawing up last loop through last st. Work off loops as on Row 1 of pat st **. One full pat has been dec'd at each side. Work in pat on the 24 (27-30) pats to 7 inches from start. Repeat from ** to ** once. Work on the 22 (25-28) pats to 15 inches or desired length. Fasten off.

Front: Work same as back.

Sew side seams. On right side crochet 1 row of sc around lower edge, join with sl st to first st. Fasten off.

Casing for Elastic: Join yarn inside waistline, * ch 5, sl st ½ inch below top and ½ inch to the left, ch 5, sl st to top edge ½ inch to the left, repeat from * around. Fasten off. Insert elastic cut to fit.

VEST

Back: With Size K hook and Color B—ch 85 (97-105). Work Row 1 of pat, working off loops until 2 rem on hook. Join Color C and draw through last 2 loops. Alternating 1 row each of Color C & B in Row 2 of pat, work off last 2 loops of each row with next color. Work on the 21 (24-26) pats to 17 inches or desired length to underarm. Width across back is 17 (19¼-21) inches.

Armholes: Sl st across 1 pat, work to last pat then work off loops as before. Repeat the 3 decrease rows as on skirt thus dec'ing 1 full pat at each side. Work on the 17 (20-22) pats to 7 (7½-8) inches straight above underarm. Fasten off.

Left Front: With Size K hook and Color B—ch 45 (49-53). Work on the 11 (12-13) pats to match back to underarm, end with same pat row as on back. Width across front is 8¾ (9½-10½) inches.

Armhole & Neck: Sl st across 1 pat, finish row. Repeat the 3 dec rows of skirt once thus dec'ing 1 pat at armhole and 1 pat at front edge for neck. Careful to keep in pat, work armhole edge even and dec at front edge until 5 (6-7) pats rem. Work until armhole matches back armhole. Fasten off.

Right Front: Work to correspond to left front, reversing the shaping. Sew shoulder and side seams. On right side with Color B and Size 0 hook—crochet 1 row of sc on lower edge. Fasten off.

On right side with Color A—crochet 1 row of sc up front edge, around neck and down left front, ch 1, do not turn. Working backward from left to right work 1 row of hdc in back loop of each st on fronts and neck. Join and fasten off. Work same edging around armholes.

CAP

With Size K hook and Color A—ch 97. Work in pat for 6 inches.

First Dec Row: With 1 loop on hook, * draw up a loop before next cluster, skip cluster, draw up a loop before single st and in single st, repeat from * across. To work off loops: Yo and through 1 loop, * yo and through 3 loops, yo and through 2 loops, repeat from * until 1 loop rem's.

2nd Dec Row: * Insert hook under 2 vertical bars of cluster and draw up 1 loop, draw up a loop in next single st, repeat from * across. To work off loops: Yo and through 1 loop, * yo and through 2 loops, repeat from * until 1 loop rem's.

3rd Dec Row: Draw up 1 loop in each cluster, draw up a loop through last st. Work off loops as on previous row. Break yarn leaving an end for sewing. Gather top tog then sew back seam. With Size 0 hook crochet 2 rows of sc around lower edge holding in to fit, fasten off.

With 4 strands of Color A crochet a 28-inch chain. Tie into bow for top and attach.
