Directions are for Small Size (8 to 10). Changes for Medium (14 to 16) are in parentheses.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Columbia-Minerva Nantuk Sweater & Afghan Yarn (2 oz pull skein): 5 skeins

Needle: One "Boye" crochet hook Size G (H)

Gauge:
On Size G—6 mesh to 4 inches
On Size H hook—5 mesh to 4 inches

VEST

Body: With Size G (H) hook ch 146.

Row 1: 1 dc in 8th ch from hook, * ch 2, skip 2 ch, 1 dc in next ch, repeat from * across, ch 5, turn. There are 47 mesh.

Row 2: Counting turning-ch as first dc and ch-2 space, work [1 dc in next dc, ch 2] 4 times, * 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next mesh, 1 dc in next dc for a 4 dc square, ch 2, [1 dc in next dc, ch 2] 4 times, repeat from * across, end 1 dc in turning-ch, ch 3, turn.

Row 3: Counting turning-ch as first dc, work 2 dc in first mesh, 1 dc in next dc for first square, ch 2, [1 dc in next dc, ch 2] twice, * 4 dc square, ch 2, 1 square, ch 2, [1 dc in next dc, ch 2] twice, repeat from * across, end 1 square, ch 5, turn.

Row 4: Repeat Row 2, ch 5, turn.

Row 5: 1 dc in next dc, * ch 2, 1 dc in next dc, repeat from * across, work last dc in turning-ch, ch 5, turn.

Row 6: 1 dc in next dc, ch 2, 1 square, ch 2, * [1 dc in next dc, ch 2] 4 times, 1 square, repeat from * across, end ch 2, 1 dc in next dc, ch 2, 1 dc in turning-ch, ch 5, turn.

Row 7: With turning-ch as first dc and mesh, starting in next dc, work [1 square, ch 2] twice, * [1 dc, ch 2] twice, [1 square, ch 2] twice, repeat from * across, end ch 2, 1 dc in turning-ch, ch 5, turn.

Row 8: Repeat Row 6.

Row 9: Repeat Row 5.

Repeat Rows 2 through 9 for pat, working to 22 inches or desired length to underarm, end with Row 4 or 8. Width across is 32 (38) inches.

To Dec At Beg Of Row: Ch 2 to turn instead of 5, then work 1 dc in next dc. On next row be sure not to work in slanted st.

To Dec At End Of Row: Holding back last loop of each dc, work 1 dc in last dc and in turning-ch, yo and through all 3 loops.

Armholes & Neck: Work 9 mesh, ch 3, turn. Keeping armhole edge even, continue in pat, dec'ing 1 pat at front edge every other row until 4 pats rem. Work on the 4 pats until armhole measures 8 (8½) inches. Fasten off.

Back: Skip 6 mesh on last long row, join yarn in dc of last skipped mesh, work 17 mesh, ch 5, turn. Work on the 17 mesh in pat to match front armhole. Fasten off. Skip 6 mesh on last long row, join yarn and work to front edge—9 pats. Finish to correspond to other front.

Seam shoulders.

Edging: Join yarn in first st of starting chain at lower right front edge, ch 1, 1 sc in space, * ch 3, 1 sc in first of the ch-3 for a picot, 1 sc in next space, repeat from * around fronts and neck. Fasten off. Work same edging around armholes.

HEADBAND

Ch 146. Work Rows 1 through 9 of pat. Fasten off.
